Because of the brightness, no part of the column is in the shadow of the sun which is shining across Bikini at the left. The cloud ring is the remains of the cloud of vapor, or fog, which enveloped the fireball the instant after the explosion. The cloud disappeared quickly. The shock wave, visible as a circle around the explosion area, is about half way to Bikini Island, approximately three miles from the point of explosion.
