Letter-writer Jon Pitt takes the mainstream media, including The Denver Post, to task for creating “their own brand of ‘real news,’ ” and for contributing to “the dismantling of public trust in media.” He states, “It’s been said that if you don’t read the newspaper you’re uninformed. And if you read it, you’re misinformed.”
On the contrary. Major newspapers like The New York Times and The Washington Post are dedicated to uncovering and reporting the truth and to holding those in power accountable; it is their raison d’être.
The freedom of the press to do its job, as enshrined in the Constitution, is absolutely essential to the survival of democracy, and the belief of the Trump administration that the media is the enemy of the people is not only inaccurate, it tears at the very fabric of this great experiment we call the United States of America.
