Don’t plan any late night voyages on Interstate 70 through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels Sunday or Monday, as each will close on successive overnights so that crews can test a fire suppression system.

The westbound tunnel — the Eisenhower — will be closed overnight on Sunday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. while the eastbound tunnel — the Johnson — will be closed overnight on Monday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motorists will be detoured over Loveland Pass.

The $20 million fixed fire suppression system was installed in 2015 to improve safety at the tunnels, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

There will also be a left lane closure in the Eisenhower Tunnel on Tuesday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and a left lane closure in the Johnson Tunnel on Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Aside from the sprinkler testing, tunnel staff will take advantage of the full night closures to perform maintenance and inspection work on lighting, water, roadway and structural elements of the tunnels.
