Hayden dog bit by rattlesnake one of at least 12 animals bitten this year in Routt, Moffat counties

The dog, named Woodford, was bitten on a paw which swelled up to the size of a grapefruit

A dog named Woodford is recovering after having a painful encounter with a rattlesnake Saturday in Hayden.

The Morris family lives on North Fifth Street in Hayden, and they were getting ready for a camping trip with the dogs in the front yard when they discovered the dog was limping and his paw and swollen to the size of a grapefruit.

Dr. Wayne Davis at the Craig Veterinary Hospital shaved Woodford’s leg and put him on a regimen of antivenin after finding two puncture wounds from a rattlesnake. Davis said he’s already treated 12 animals this year from Routt and Moffat counties for rattlesnake bites.The number and timing are unusual because rattlesnake bites usually occur in late summer and early fall.
