Gov. John Hickenlooper announced Salazar’s appointment on Wednesday, saying she will begin her role as executive director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies on July 24.

Salazar is transitioning from being the state’s insurance commissioner, a role she’s held since since August 2013 and in which she oversaw the regulation of the insurance industry.

Prior to joining the state, she served as a regional for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was appointed by President Barack Obama to oversee the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in Colorado and surrounding states.

“Few are more deserving and capable of this position than Marguerite,” Hickenlooper said in a written statement. “She has guided the Division of Insurance through a time of great change in our country and has helped Colorado be a leader in the industry. Her experience in one of the agency’s divisions provides a steady and guiding hand during this time of transition.”

Nine divisions fall under DORA’s umbrella, including banking, civil rights, insurance, and financial services.
