Felony murder charges filed in 7-Eleven shooting, third man arrested

Police have arrested a third suspect in the shooting death of a 39-year-old man outside a 7-Eleven near the state Capitol.

Aurora police arrested Ru Shawn Bykei Wharton at around 11 p.m. Thursday.

Police had already and Keondre Neblett, 17, on Monday in connection to the killing early Sunday morning of on East Colfax Avenue near the state Capitol.

Denver District Attorney Beth McCann formally charged Houston and Neblett with one count of first-degree felony murder and one count of robbery. Neblett is being charged as an adult. Charges were direct-filed Thursday afternoon in Denver District Court.

Houston and Neblett are accused of variously participating in a sequence of events at the 7-Eleven store beginning at 12:17 a.m. on Sunday including the beating, robbery and shooting death of Slyter.

Homicide detectives had reviewed indoor and outdoor surveillance video of the robbery, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

At the time of the earlier arrests, Denver police said they also recovered a white sedan with a sunroof that was recorded fleeing the convenience store.

Slyter, 39, was shot outside the store as he attempted to recover his wallet, which had been stolen during a fight in the store’s parking lot.

This file has been updated to remove the name of a suspect who was arrested Friday in an unrelated homicide.
