A black bear sits in a tree in Boulder on Sept. 22, 2015.

Pyrenee Steiner was hanging out at her father’s west Boulder home on Tuesday night and watching his girlfriend’s 7-year-old golden retriever, Tara, when an unexpected house guest arrived.

“They were supposed to be gone for a while and I heard the door crack open,” Steiner said, thinking her father and his girlfriend had returned early. “I was like, ‘Hello … hello’ but no one replied so I was like, whatever. I told the dog to ‘go get ’em.'”

Steiner had been looking at her phone and not really paying attention, but she turned around eventually and saw the large black bear walking that had pushed open the unlatched front door and made its way down the flight of stairs that leads from the front door of the home to the living room.

“It didn’t look like it was dangerous or trying to cause harm,” she said. “It wasn’t grunting or growling. It was walking down the stairs.”

Nevertheless, Steiner said she “freaked out,” and Tara, who is a low key kind of dog, tore off after the bear, barking and growling. The bear turned and walked back up the stairs, although not in a terrible rush.
