A Weld County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on suspicion of assault and child abuse.

Derek Kinch, 32, a deputy since 2008, was arrested Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office. Kinch is assigned to the courts division.

On Friday the sheriff’s department was made aware of a possible child abuse case in the 11000 block of Montgomery Circle, near Longmont, a sheriff’s news release said. An investigation was launched, and Kinch was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, a felony, and misdemeanor child abuse.

Kinch has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case. An internal investigation by the sheriff’s office is also ongoing.
