A 17-year-old boy died after falling from the First Flatiron on Sunday evening while climbing the rock formation by himself, Boulder County sheriff’s officials said.
The boy — whose identity has not yet been released — was found by a hiker near the base of the First Flatiron, above the Blue Bell Shelter in Chautauqua Park, according to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
Rescue personnel located the boy near the bottom of the First Flatiron, and found him unconscious without a pulse and not breathing. Despite attempts at medical treatment, he was declared dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
The boy appeared to have suffered “massive trauma” during a fall. Investigators believe he was climbing alone, and say the man posted a picture on social media from near the top of the First Flatiron shortly before the fall was reported.
The case remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected at this time, sheriff’s officials said.
