Scattered around churchyards, pocketed on school grounds and strewn around neighborhoods throughout Adams County are dozens of community gardens that have been plotted by residents, church groups, students and a countywide volunteer organization called The Adams Community Gardens CO-OP.
to help fill a widening gap of available organic produce to local residents who can’t afford much of it in grocery stores. At CO-OP community gardens, the the majority of the produce is donated to low-income residents, but volunteers who plant and maintain the gardens take a share of what comes out of the ground. There are more than 20 CO-OP gardens in the county today.
On average, CO-OP gardens in Adams County yield an estimated 7.1 tons of produce, or 56,602 servings to about 15 food banks and pantries from Thornton and Commerce City all the way to Strasburg and Deer Trail every year.
And there are plenty of community gardens where residents can buy plots and tend and harvest vegetables just for their own families, too. Whether you’re looking to volunteer, plant a personal garden or receive supplemental produce, there’s a garden plot in Adams County with your name on it.
