Denver prosecutor Amy Padden files to run for attorney general

Padden joins four other Democrats in the race to unseat Republican Cynthia Coffman, who’s not certain to seek re-election.

Denver attorney Amy Padden, a former state and federal prosecutor, filed this week to run for Colorado attorney general, joining a crowded Democratic field.

In the mid-2000s, Padden served as an assistant attorney general under former Attorney General John Suthers, under whom she prosecuted consumer protection cases against charities and businesses.

More recently, she served as the executive assistant U.S. attorney, a role she left last month, .

“I intend to continue that public service as our state’s next attorney general, and I will work tirelessly to increase public safety and ensure that consumers are protected,” Padden said in a news release announcing her filing.

Prior to her public sector work, Padden was a partner at the Denver-based firm Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell.

Padden joins four other Democrats in the race to unseat Republican Cynthia Coffman, who herself is flirting with a . The other candidates so far include , former dean of the University of Colorado Law School; ; , a deputy prosecutor from Boulder; and state .

Padden plans to formally announce her candidacy “soon” at a campaign event.
