Comcast expands its $9.95/monthly internet services for low-income households

Colorado ranks 9th for Comcast’s Internet Essentials program

Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which offers discounted broadband service to low-income households, is speeding up and expanding its reach, the company plans to announce on Tuesday.

Subscribers to the $9.95 monthly plan will see internet download speeds rise to 15 megabits per second, from 10 mbps, while upload speeds will double to 2 mbps.

Users also will get 40 hours of free monthly access to any of Comcast’s 17 million Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots outside of the home. The service is free to regular Comcast internet customers, though noncustomers can pay to use it for $2.95 an hour. In Denver and Colorado, there are 1,000 and 41,000 public Xfinity hotspots, respectively, according to Comcast.

In Colorado, the program targets low-income households with at least one child who qualifies for the National School Lunch Program or .

A separate will also expand to seven more communities this year, starting with Miami Dade County in Florida. Existing senior programs are available in Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia dn Palm Beach County, Fla.

Comcast officials did not say whether Colorado seniors will soon see this option.

At 150,000 households, California topped the list for the number of households that subscribe to Comcast’s service. Colorado ranked ninth nationwide, with 42,000 households.
