Two Weld County residents have contracted West Nile virus, and one of them was hospitalized with the most serious form of the infection, according to a Weld County Health Department news release.
Those infected were a Greeley woman and a Windsor man, who was hospitalized with neuro-invasive West Nile virus. Health officials are investigating two other potential cases, according to the release. Last year, there were 27 human cases in Weld County.
Mosquito trapping and testing will end for the season Aug. 31, but the risk for human infection will continue until the first hard killing frost.
“It’s hard to predict the weather, but we still have at least two months of West Nile virus season,” said Mark Wallace, executive director of the Weld County Health Department, in the release. “With many outdoor school events occurring in the evenings, the public still needs to prevent getting bit my mosquitoes.”
