Firefighters from Colorado’s Front Range on Sunday to help search for and rescue people caught up in the flooding from Hurricane Harvey.

At least three from Aurora Fire Rescue, three from the Castle Rock Fire Department and two from Denver Fire already had deployed Sunday.  A dozen others from Denver Fire were on standby, department spokesman Greg Pixley said.

“We understand there’s going to be a need for some water rescues,” Pixley said, noting Denver Fire is equipped with a boat and that members have experience from dealing with Hurricane Katrina.

“They have the skills to assist in whatever they are asked to assist with,” he said.

Aurora Fire issued a bulletin: “Water is rising. Stay safe Texas.”

Some had deployed early Sunday. Others were preparing for deployment. Firefighters around the nation were offering support as flood waters engulfed southern Texas.

The Colorado firefighters are organized into a 200-member interagency “Task Force One, ” sponsored by West Metro Fire Rescue under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The team includes highly trained firefighters, paramedics, physicians, engineers, hazardous materials technicians, canine handlers and others. They’re self-sufficient, able to operate for up to 72 hours without support during an initial deployment.

They move to disasters and rescue people who are trapped in cities. In the past, these first responders helped people after the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11, hurricanes, floods and tornadoes.
