A woman was shot near a busy intersection in Aurora on Monday during the evening rush hour.

The incident happened at East Mississippi Avenue and South Havana Street, according to Aurora police.

At about 5:45 p.m. responding officers found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said in a news release.

Police said people in two vehicles eastbound on Mississippi “were involved in the shooting,” which caused a traffic collision involving a third vehicle.

The driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene. Police said it’s “unknown” how many people were inside the two vehicles when the shooting happened.

Traffic on Mississippi was temporarily shut down in both directions after the incident.

The identity of the victim was not released. Further details on the suspect vehicle were not released.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the shooting, and has not talked with police, or anyone with information on the incident or on suspects, is asked to call police at 303-739-6067; or call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
