Management at Boulder’s National Center for Atmospheric Research on Wednesday announced program reductions that will eliminate 18 positions that receive base funding from the National Science Foundation.

NCAR also will eliminate 18 currently vacant positions, which translate to eight full-time equivalents. In combination with other non-labor reductions, the changes announced Wednesday, effective immediately, represent about $9 million of NCAR’s base funding from NSF.

It is possible that some of the 18 staffers who have lost NSF funding might be able to stay if they can secure funding from alternate sources. NCAR has about 780 people on staff, according to an NCAR spokesman.
