Brothers Fred, 78, Arthur, 70, and their nephew Tom, 64, the bay of the team, are coming out of retirement to pass on their skills to keep the name Gandolfi on the World's finest Wooden cameras. The business was started in South London, where it remains, by Louis Gandolfi, a cabinet maker, in 1880, a far-sighted man who saw a future in the relatively new art of photography. Demand for his mahogany and brass bellows stand cameras was so great that the whole family of seven and his wife all pitched in the help. Louis Gandolfi and Sons was set to become the oldest and longest established wood camera makers in the world. In 1981, Fred Gandolfi, one of the remaining sons in the business had a road accident which damaged his hands, and at that time they decided that the firm was to be run down despite their having an order back full for four years in advance. However, demand for these quality all hand-built large-format cameras is such, that a firm in Hampshire, west of London, is hoping to be able to develop the skills and take over production to most the world demand for a quality which seems only to belong to a past generation. Gandolfi are traditionally strong wooden cameras, and a photographer needing a specialised camera could approach Gandolfi with their requests. It was fitted with the a wide-angled lens, and the camera was made with a drop baseboard and a rack and pinion in-box focusing.
