Re: Aug. 24 news story.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke received 2.4 million comments on the attempt to undo protections for national monuments. According to the Center for Western Priorities, 98 percent of the comments were in favor of the national monuments. Instead, Zinke has recommended to President Donald Trump that significant portions of the monuments be turned over to special interests.

The Antiquities Act enables presidents to create monuments, not rescind them. Bears Ears, Grand-Staircase Escalante and othersmust not be reduced or given over to special interests. They are valuable to all Americans, including Native Americans. The Antiquities Act was designed to prevent looting archaeological artifacts. Bears Ears’ elevation to monument status will protect it.

I ask our Colorado senators and representatives to stand with nearly 2.4 million people, including Coloradans, and end this assault on our natural heritage.
