Hours before their season opener against the Chargers, the Broncos promoted rookie nose tackle Tyrique Jarrett from the practice squad and, according to a league source, re-signed Kyle Peko to the practice squad.

Jarrett was signed as a college free agent out of Pittsburgh following the draft and quickly turned heads with his size (6-foot-3, 335 pounds) and raw ability.

“Todd (Davis) and I call him ‘Pot Roast Jr,'” inside linebacker said in June. “Hopefully he can live up to that. When Terrance Knighton was in there, I remember one time he told me when we played the Bills, ‘Look man, when you see me in front of you, just go make the play.’ He took up a double team, and sat there for three seconds and I just made the play. I said, ‘Thatap what I’m talking about.’ Hopefully (Jarrett) can do that.”

At Pittsburgh, Jarrett started 18 of 32 games and notched 59 tackles (34 solo) and three sacks.

In the Broncos’ four preseason games, he registered four total tackles.

On Saturday the Broncos waived Peko and announced starting defensive (back) and backup Zach Kerr (knee) would be ruled out of Monday’s opener. Crick suffered a back injury during training camp and missed the Broncos’ last three preseason games. Although he was limited in practice last Thursday, Crick did not practice Friday or Saturday.

“I think Jared is getting better, but he’s not well enough to play a football game right now,” coach said. “In our opinion, if we put him out there this week, which we could probably, it would hurt us moving down the road. As a group discussion we thought resting him this week would help us down the road with Jared Crick.”

Kerr, also labeled day-to-day, has not practiced since injuring his knee against the , on Aug. 26.

In Crick’s and Kerr’s absence, second-year player will start opposite , and Domata Peko will anchor the line at nose tackle. Shelby Harris and Jarrett will be the lone reserves.
