Tons of watermelons were wasted on a highway Tuesday when a semi truck caught fire in the foothills west of Denver.

The truck, carrying 41,000 pounds of watermelon, burst into flame on U.S. 285 near C-470, according to West Metro Fire Rescue.

“Overheated brakes” are the most likely cause of the fire, West Metro said. No one was injured.

The semi-cab and trailer were charred by the flames. Black, burned melons spilled down an embankment onto Turkey Creek Road. Traffic on the highway was delayed by the afternoon incident.
