The Aspen School District plans to add more staff housing to West Ranch near Woody Creek, which currently has five duplexes occupied by faculty members and their families.

The Aspen School District may spend $840,000 on a three-bedroom condo as it looks to add to its employee housing stock.

The Board of Education authorized the purchase of a Snowmass Village condominium for no more than $844,500 at a meeting Monday. The condo has an appraised value of $850,000, according to the Pitkin County Assessor’s Office.

The district is looking for ways to house teachers and staff in an area known for its exorbitant housing costs. The district owns 43 housing units. The district also is considering building on land it purchased in 1998 near Woody Creek. The district already has five duplexes there.

“It’s important to attract and retain quality staff, and I think the acquisition of this property is one more piece of doing that Jenga game of employee housing,” board member Sandra Peirce said.
