The University of Colorado hosts No. 7 Washington on Saturday night to begin Pac-12 play at Folsom Field. Following is a scouting report by The Denver Post’s college football reporter Kyle Fredrickson.
When Colorado runs
Phillip Lindsay is well on pace for a second 1,000-yard rushing season with 326 yards through three games, but sloppy offensive line play has been a concern through much of the nonconference. UW once again has projected NFL talent on its defensive line in juniors Vita Vea and Greg Gaines. The unit has yet to allow a touchdown run this season. Edge: Washington.
When Washington runs
Myles Gaskin dominated the Buffs a year ago with 159 yards on 29 carries, but coach Chris Petersen has called the Huskies’ run game “a work in progress” this fall as Gaskin has rushed for only 59 and 61 yards against FBS nonconference opponents. The Buffs have also not allowed a rushing score through three games. Edge: Colorado.
When Colorado passes
Steven Montez set career highs for passing yards (357) and passing touchdowns (four) last week against Northern Colorado and three Buffs have now surpassed 200 yards receiving on the year. Washington returns just one starter in the secondary (safety JoJo McIntosh) from its dominant group a season ago, but the unit has already tallied five interceptions this fall. Edge: Even.
When Washington passes
Jake Browning finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting last season and was among the nation’s most efficient quarterbacks. Washington is without the talents of dynamic receiver John Ross, but return All-Pac-12 performer Dante Pettis and several weapons on the edge. The Buffs were beat over the top for three deep touchdown passes against UNC. Edge: Washington.
Special teams
No team in the country can match what Washington has accomplished so far on special teams as Pettis has returned punts for touchdowns in three consecutive games. CU must be diligent in its understanding of where Pettis is on the field at all times, especially when the Buffaloes are forced to punt. Edge: Washington.
