Re: “,” Sept. 22 Diane Carman column.
Diane Carman rightly cites some of the pitfalls of having Amazon’s second headquarters located in the Denver metro area. In a nutshell, she is arguing that this growth will continue the leap from prosperity to pure sprawl. She cautions us to be careful what we ask for because we might get it. Denver certainly meets the criteria set out by Amazon and is an easy choice. It also lacks courage.
A courageous choice would be to bring that level of investment to a place that needs it. Puerto Rico is bankrupt and suffering from two hurricane hits this year. On the plus side, in Puerto Rico there is an international airport, great recreation and you can build whatever infrastructure you need. Similarly, there are cities like Detroit or regions like coal country that will give more bang for the buck than Denver to Amazon’s employees.
Amazon has reshaped retail. Now it’s time to be courageous again.
