The FBI is aiding local police in a financial probe of the Fremont County Clerk and Recorder’s Office that authorities say stems from discrepancies revealed in a preliminary investigation that began days ago.

The Cañon City Police Department announced the investigation Wednesday but declined to say if elected is a target of their review.

Harvey said the Fremont County attorney reached out to his agency last week to request the investigation.
Police say the FBI is “merely providing technical assistance and has not opened a federal case.”
Search warrants in the case are being served, and no charges have been filed.
Further details on the probe were not released.
