70-year-old climber injured in fall from Third Flatiron

An off-duty Rocky Mountain Rescue volunteer provided medical care.

A 70-year-old climber was injured when he fell as much as 40 feet while rappelling off the Third Flatiron on Saturday in Boulder County.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m., according to county officials.

The climber was with others when he fell, and he injured his head and face. “An off-uty Rocky Mountain Rescue volunteer was in the area at the time of the incident and provided medical care,” the county said. He was not wearing a helmet.

Agencies that responded in his rescue were Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder Fire Rescue, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, AMR ambulance and the sheriff’s office.
