Re: “,” Oct. 2 news story.
How is it that Congress let funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program expire? CHIP is a federal program that provides affordable health insurance for 9 million low-income children in the U.S., including 75,000 Colorado children. It also provides prenatal care for pregnant women, including 800 Coloradans.
Health data is clear that good prenatal care and children’s access to health care improve health outcomes in a population. How is it that, in the midst of the rancorous health care debate, Congress failed to renew a program with demonstrated beneficial health outcomes, both short- and long-term?
There is strong bipartisan support for renewing CHIP, and Congress must remember to do so.
