While Kristi Baker recovered after kidney stones sent her into organ failure, she was intubated and couldn’t speak. She used what basic sign language she knew, which was mostly the alphabet, and wrote down messages when she needed to communicate.

After she recovered, she saw a notice for a group called Hands in Praise, a Windsor group that interprets worship songs using American Sign Language to ensure everyone can participate and enjoy the music. She decided joining the group would be a perfect way to give back.

Elaine Mainwaring, director and founder of Hands in Praise, founded the group in 2008. The group has 21 members who belong to 10 churches in northern Colorado. The group interprets worship songs for weddings, funerals, church services, Easter services, Christmas services and more.

Hands in Praise will perform a 30-minute show Nov. 13 at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tenn. The group also will perform at a few churches in Nashville.
