Eagle County authorities alerted the public and urged caution Friday after a mountain lion sighting was reported near the Gypsum Creek Golf Club.

Mountain lion sightings are relatively rare, even in Colorado’s mountain communities. But mountain lions are active year-round in Eagle County and are more likely to be spotted when their prey — including deer — move closer to populated area, wildlife officials said.

Mountain lions also will occasionally attack pets. In January 2016, mountain lions killed two dogs within a week in Eagle County.
