A former Elbert County sheriff’s deputy pleaded guilty this week to shooting a mule deer while on duty and later returning to bag the buck.
Stephen Few pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public servant, hunting big game without a license and illegal possession of wildlife, according to the Elbert County District Attorney’s Office. Additional charges were dropped in return for the guilty pleas.
Few, a retired Georgia State Police officer, was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service.
On Nov. 16, 2016, Few used his county-issued .40-caliber at about 11:30 p.m. just outside the town of Elbert. Few dragged the carcass off the road in an attempt to hide it. A hunting guide came across the dead deer the next day and called a state Department of Wildlife officer.
The wildlife officer hid in nearby woods and watched as Few returned, about 24 hours after the deer was shot. When the wildlife officer turned on lights he found Few trying to cut off the deer’s head with a knife.
Few initially faced eight criminal charges in the case.
