A former Boulder youth soccer coach under investigation for “inappropriate and illegal conduct” was spotted by police watching soccer games through binoculars earlier this month, including games involving an alleged victim in the case.

Phil Hufstader resigned from FC Boulder soccer club in August and is currently under investigation by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

At 5 p.m. on Oct. 14, Boulder police were called after a man was spotted at 3245 Kalmia Ave., watching games being played at Pleasant View Soccer Fields through binoculars.

When police found the man, he identified himself as Hufstader and said he used to coach the teams playing but that he had been suspended from the team but still wanted to watch them play their games.

“I want to keep my distance,” he told the officer, according to the report. “I left for a reason, there was a big debacle, I don’t want to be necessarily closely associated, but I want to know that they are doing well.”

The officer told him that he should watch the games from the field or not at all, to which Hufstader said, “I’m not an idiot, I just love soccer and want to see the teams do well.”
