Buyer and renter beware! Ideally, all vehicles should have spare tires, but some (and apparently the trend is growing), including models sold to rental companies, are not even designed today with space for spares by auto manufacturers for various reasons. Less cost. Less weight/better gas mileage. Who needs a spare anymore? Whatever.

My 2013 Ford C-Max hybrid had no spare and I was told that there was no room for one due to space being taken up with the batteries. Instead, the vehicle was supplied with a compact air compressor for normal inflation that can also engage a sealant cartridge for a really bad leak. Nice if I pick up a nail, but useless otherwise, so I went on the internet and found an applicable emergency “donut” spare which I carry on extended trips that a road service provider could mount. Rental companies take note.
