I disagree with letter-writer Susan Altenhofen on some of her statements on cat declawing. I agree that outdoor cats should never be declawed; however, cats that spend the majority of their lives indoors and are closely supervised when they are outdoors are a different story. I have always had my cats declawed and I can assure you that not a single one has ever suffered more from that surgery than they have from being neutered or spayed. Their discomfort is temporary, as it is with any surgery or procedure. They still jump to the highest bookshelves, use the litter box with no problems, scratch to mark their territory, roll toilet paper across the house and sleep on my head. I would rather see the emphasis put on getting all pets spayed and neutered than focus on declawing.
