Commuters with an E-470 ExpressToll account will have one thing to count on through 2020: Tolls on the beltway looping around the eastern edge of metro Denver will not go up.
The authority also said it would drop the rate between Interstate 70 and Peña Boulevard by 25 cents to help ease congestion on neighboring roads.
But license plate tolls are getting a boost to cover the cost of collecting tolls from people who haven’t signed up for ExpressToll. License plate toll drivers who take entire 47-mile road can expect to pay $21.80, compared with $14.25 for ExpressToll customers. Currently, an ExpressToll customer pays $14.50, compared with $18.20 a license-plate toll customer.
“This should incentivize drivers to sign up for an ExpressToll account to benefit from the huge savings,” E-470 executive director Tim Stewart said. “It takes a large amount of resources and manpower to maintain the cameras, look up each license plate, cross reference the plate with the state DMV for verification, send out printed bills and continue to collect on those tolls.”
