A man wanted on a Kansas arrest warrant who pointed a BB gun at officers during a standoff at an Evans motel has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
David Blanco, 29, was convicted by a Weld County jury in October on three counts of felony menacing and four counts of child abuse, according to the district attorney’s office.
On Sept. 10, 2016, Blanco was checked into the Rodeway Inn, 3015 Eighth Ave., when an Evans police officer checked the registry for outstanding warrants. Blanco was wanted on a 2013 felony warrant for burglary and possession of methamphetamine.
Three Evans officers went to the room, where Blanco pointed a gun at them. at Blanco but missed, and Blanco , according to a news release. It was later determined Blanco was armed with a BB gun, a handgun replica. A woman and four children who were in the room were taken to safety.
SWAT members were deployed and used tear gas to get Blanco to surrender.
“The defendant didn’t point his gun in self-defense. He did this to avoid consequences,” said Chris Ponce, deputy district attorney, at Monday’s sentencing. “Thatap the theme of his life: to evade consequences. For years, he has avoided paying his debt to society for the crimes he’s committed, but that ends today.”
Blanco will be extradited to Kansas after completion of his Colorado sentence, the release said.
