The Manitou Incline, a workout venue used by Olympic athletes and weekend warriors alike because of its steep climb up a former tourist cable car route, has been closed by the City of Manitou Springs in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

A news release put out by the city on Wednesday said the closure was prudent because “there are not suitable sanitization options available to those who visit the Incline,” adding that emergencies would put first responders in a “high-risk situation.”

The Incline typically attracts 1,000 visitors daily.

“While we were reluctant to close the Incline, we had far more grave reservations regarding public health,” Mayor John Graham said in the release.

The trail, which sits in the shadow of Pikes Peak, rises 2,000 feet over 2,744 steps with an average grade of 41%.
