Much of the reason behind Colorado State’s tumble from Mountain West football championship contention this fall centered on lackluster defense, and now change is on the horizon.
CSU announced that defensive coordinator Marty English will retire following the Rams’ still-to-be-determined bowl game. English had served in the role for two seasons after four years previously as linebackers coach.
“I want to thank Marty English for his dedicated service to our football program and to Colorado State University,” coach said in a news release. “Marty has done an excellent job as a coach, teacher and leader of young men at Colorado State for the past six seasons, including the last three with me, and has represented us with class. He is a loyal, dedicated coach and family person, and somebody for whom I have a great deal of respect.”
In 2017, CSU’s defense allowed an average of 27.5 points per game and 425.8 yards. On Oct. 28, Air Force rushed for 413 yards in an upset victory, which began a three-game slide.
English is a Colorado native with 31 years of experience coaching college football. The former Northern Colorado linebacker made coaching stops at UNC, Wyoming and CSU. In 2013, he mentored linebacker Shaquil Barrett to Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors.
CSU’s bowl fate will be announced Dec. 3.
