Earthquake rattles Salida Thursday night — but only a little

At 3.6 magnitude, the quake was considered weak. Some thought it was an explosion

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit near Salida Thursday night, reaching a little more than 3 miles deep, according to .

Most reports submitted to USGS about the quake, which struck at 10:17 p.m. about 15 miles southeast of Salida, came from the towns of Howard and Cotopaxi. USGS considered the quake to be weak.

“As far as in Salida, everyone I’ve talked to, it’s like it didn’t happen,” Salida fire chief Doug Bess said.

He did say a wife of one of his firemen called from Cotopaxi, thinking the quake was some sort of explosion.

also said it was “a fairly uneventful earthquake” but noted that people felt it downstream. Although there are occasionally little quakes in San Luis Valley, he said he hasn’t experienced one in Salida in the 30 years he’s been there.

“We’re all paying a lot more attention now,” he said.
