Prosecutors say a Colorado man has pleaded guilty to a theft charge after collecting cancer donations for a dying friend but keeping $12,000 for himself.
Denver District Attorney Beth McCann’s office says 52-year-old Scott Kesterson pleaded guilty on Thursday in Denver District Court. The statement says Kesterson received a two-year deferred sentence and also was ordered to pay $15,656 in restitution.
Kesterson also has to pay $3,831 to cover costs of extraditing him from Montana, where he was arrested in August.
McCann’s office says he made the payments on Thursday.
The statement says Kesterson started a fund for a Denver attorney with cancer named Kelly de la Torre. He collected donations between October 2013 and February 2014. Prosecutors say de la Torre died in late November of 2013.
