INDIANAPOLIS — Ahead of their Thursday night game against the Colts, the Broncos promoted practice-squad safety Dymonte Thomas to the active roster, filling the vacancy left by . Simmons was placed on injured reserve Wednesday because of an ankle sprain he suffered in the Broncos’ win over the last Sunday.

Thomas, a 6-foot-2, 199-pound undrafted rookie out of Michigan, signed with the Broncos after the draft in May and competed with the team in training camp and preseason, when he impressed with a 58-yard pick-six in the team’s home win against the Cardinals.

In four years at Michigan, Thomas appeared in 47 games (21 starts) and recorded 128 tackles, one interception, 18 pass-breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Simmons, who was elevated to a starting role after the Broncos released veteran in September, started all 13 games he played and totaled 63 tackles, one sack, two interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, and five pass-breakups.

The injury brought an abrupt end to a strong second year for Simmons, but gives him ample time to recover since the team has already been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Broncos’ safety corps now features veteran , second-year player and two undrafted rookies in Thomas and Jamal Carter.
