The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Monday demolished a 300-meter high research tower in Erie that was decommissioned last summer.
Explosives were set off at the base to bring the tower down, Mountain View Fire Rescue said.
The tower, operated by NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory, was used for 40 years to study weather and air quality. In recent years it had been primarily used to monitor regional air quality.
The 100-acre parcel of State Land Board-owned land will be reclaimed for commercial development and other purposes.
