A Colorado Buffaloes football legend has received an impressive new job title.

Eric Bieniemy — a former CU tailback (1987-1990) who rushed for 3,940 yards and 41 touchdowns — is the new offensive coordinator for the NFL’s , the team announced Tuesday.

Bieniemy, a New Orleans native, played nine years in the NFL between the , and Philadelphia Eagles before returning to CU as running backs coach in 2001 and 2002. After coaching stints at UCLA and with the , Bieniemy was brought back as the Buffs’ offensive coordinator for another two seasons in 2011 and 2012. He was dismissed as part of the staff overhaul that brought current coach Mike MacIntyre to CU.

Bieniemy has coached running backs the past five seasons in Kansas City. He is replacing Matt Nagy, who Monday was named the head coach.

Bieniemy, 48, was a unanimous All-America selection in 1990 and he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting.

“(Boulder) is where it all started,” Bieniemy told The Denver Post in 2011. “Maybe every alum feels this way, regardless of the school you go to. There’s something special about this university. A lot of friendships were built here. The foundation of my manhood started here.”
