Re: “Denver makes Amazon’s HQ2 finalist list — along with 19 other cities,” Jan. 18 news story.
Denver has made the short list for Amazon’s second headquarters. Is this idea really a good fit for Denver? Amazon has built its nationwide fulfillment centers with $241 million dollars in tax incentives in just over the past two years. How much more will they demand from Colorado and Denver taxpayers? Will we end up like another San Francisco, where half our money goes to pay taxes? The real estate market here is so hot now, you are lucky to get a home after offering 10 percent to 20 percent above the list price. When Amazon comes, we’ll see $1 million “starter” homes and $2,500 monthly rents for a one-bedroom apartment. We will need new roads and bridges. We will need new additional resources such as police, fire, new schools and parks, all paid for by the local taxpayers. We don’t need Amazon.

Why would anyone in their right mind want Amazon to come here? We don’t need one more car on the streets, or one more large building. Denver used to be a wonderful city, where you could drive anywhere without a traffic jam. There were beautiful stores. Quality of life was considered, instead of just money, money. I was born here more than 94 years ago, so it is too late for me to move. I’m hoping Amazon will go elsewhere.
