Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old inmate who used a fellow inmate’s identity to escape the Garfield County.

Jail correctional officers mistakenly released Armando Jose Mayo at 11 p.m. Monday after he used someone else’s identification to slip out of the jail, according to a news release.

Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallerio is calling the incident a release error.

Mayo was being held on a charge of failure to comply/failure to pay warrant out of Grand Junction at the time of the escape.

Authorities arrested him at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, the news release says.

Mayo now faces additional charges of committing identity theft and criminal impersonation.
