Fitzsimmons wins Gatorade award
Mountain Vista sophomore Jenna Fitzsimmons was named the state’s Gatorade cross country runner of the year the first Golden Eagles athlete to win the prestigious award.
Fitzsimmons won the individual Class 5A state title this past fall in a time of 18:10.3, while also pacing the Golden Eagle girls to their first team championship. Additionally, the 5-foot-2 Fitzsimmons placed sixth at the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regionals and 30th in an elite field at the Nike Cross Nationals Final.
She boasts a 4.0 GPA and has also gained off-the-racecourse recognition for her efforts assisting special needs children.
Thistlewood drops 47 points
Amid the myriad of standout performances in local prep basketball over the weekend, none might top Golden senior Adam Thistlewood’s 47-point, 10-rebound effort in No. 6 Golden’s blowout of D’Evelyn on Friday. The double-double included six three-pointers and four blocks for the versatile 6-foot-7 forward who is committed to Drake.
Thistlewood is averaging 23.4 points per game this season, second in all of Class 4A only to Silver Creek senior Trent Dykema. The senior chose Drake over offers from Davidson, Colorado State and Northern Colorado, citing the Bulldogs’ high academics (Thistlewood sports a 4.33 GPA) as well as the chance to play as a freshman.
The Demons (14-3) are in action next on Wednesday at Wheat Ridge.
