Re: “Yes, the press must be free; it also must be fair to Trump,” Nov. 29 letters to the editor.

Letter-writers William F. Hineser and Peter Bruno try to paint Donald Trump as the victim of “fake news” attacks and lament he is treated unfairly by the media. But the only fake news I hear comes out of the presidentap mouth — from “Mexico will pay for the wall” to the “largest inaugural crowd in history” to saying he didn’t try to fire Robert Mueller.

Per fact checkers, Trump logged 2,000 lies in his first year in office. How many times will it take for these hardcore Trump supporters stop defending Trump when he resorts to crying “fake news” to every lie he plies? The fact is, Trump is a narcissistic charlatan, liar and grifter and any narrative that characterizes Trump otherwise is fake news.

I was deeply dismayed reading William F. Hineser’s letter and somewhat dismayed by Peter Bruno’s letter — in particular, the reference to “fake news.” I read a variety of press sources daily: The Denver Post, Reuters, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and listen to NPR. I have not encountered “fake news.” I am aware The New York Times, ABC News and CNN have had to retract misstated facts, but these retractions were made swiftly. These entities have taken disciplinary actions if the mistake was serious enough and the journalist involved did not follow internal editorial procedures.

I trust the various news sources I read and believe in their integrity. It divides the citizens of this great country if we believe there is “fake news” out there and if we, as citizens, do not make the effort to find resources to help us fact-check and then call out our news sources upon these mistakes.
