Starting out as a slalom phenom, Shiffrin made her World Cup debut at age 15, captured her first podium at age 16 and her first win at age 17. She won the slalom at the 2013 world championships when she was 17 and became Olympic slalom champion at age 18. She has won 41 World Cup races and four world championships medals, and last March she became the fifth American to win the most prestigious title in skiing, the World Cup overall title. She is leading the overall standings this season by a massive margin and will be favored in slalom and giant slalom in this Olympics. She also is a strong contender for a medal in alpine combined, and if she competes in the speed events, could snag another medal in one of those races.
