A high school student who was killed when her SUV was struck by a train at a railroad crossing in Eaton Tuesday night is the second teenager in a year to lose their life at that same crossing.
Kennedi Ingram was a senior at Eaton High School.
Ingram died when a train crashed into her car at the railroad crossing near the intersection of Fifth Street and U.S. 85 just before 6 p.m. At the time of the crash, the teen was driving west on Fifth and the train, operated by Union Pacific, was heading south.
16-year-old Dallas Duran was killed by a train at that same intersection in February 2017.
Colorado Public Utilities Commission spokesman Terry Bote said the Colorado Department of Transportation and Union Pacific are working on a plan for improvements to crossings along the U.S. 85 corridor, including the one in Eaton. But no applications have been submitted to the PUC.
UPDATE: This story was updated at 8:25 a.m. Feb. 9, 2018, to correct information about safety improvements to the crossing where Kennedi Ingram was killed. A plan is being developed, but has not been approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
