The Winter Park Express still will carry passengers to and from the Grand County ski area even as Amtrak announced that it will halt special trains and charter services.

In a notice to employees, Amtrak said running the side trains caused operational distractions, didn’t earn enough profit and at times delayed paying customers on scheduled trains, .

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the announcement doesn’t affect the ski train, which is in its second year of a three-year contract.

If the train were to stop after the contract expired, Magliari said that would be unrelated to this week’s announcement.
