Denver District Attorney Beth McCann has formally charged Terry Dunford with the stabbing death of a 49-year-old mother in her downtown loft.

Authorities found Jeanna Leslie with multiple stab wounds inside her apartment on Valentine’s Day, according to an arrest affidavit. Leslie’s family had asked for police to check on her after she didn’t pick up her teenage children for a Denver Nuggets basketball game the night before.

The DA’s office believes Leslie was killed on Feb. 7, the last day her phone was used.

There was blood around the apartment, as well as signs of someone attempting to clean up the stains, according to the affidavit. IDs belonging to Dunford were also found. Video surveillance from a liquor store on Feb. 7 show Leslie entering and leaving with Dunford, who police described as homeless. The beer she bought was left in the apartment.

Dunford, 40, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. The DA’s office filed the charges late Tuesday afternoon.

He is being held without bond in Denver city jail and is scheduled to appear for advisement on Feb. 22.
