Rock Canyon point guard Sam Masten wins Colorado boys basketball Gatorade Player of the Year

The senior led the Jaguars back to a second straight Class 5A Final Four and is averaging 22.5 points per game

Rock Canyon point guard Sam Masten was named the state’s boys basketball Gatorade Player of the Year on Thursday morning, becoming the first Jaguar to receive the honor.

The senior leads Rock Canyon into its second straight Class 5A Final Four on Friday, when the Jaguars take on George Washington at 8:30 p.m. Masten ranks second in the state in scoring average at 22.5 points per game, and is also putting up 7.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

A University of Northern Colorado commit, the 6-foot-4, 170-pounder holds a 3.84 GPA and is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March.
